Danielle Mack, whose sister was murdered by the Gilgo Beach serial killer, told a New York court on Wednesday that her sister’s killer believed women were “his to destroy” and did not “have the humanity to feel remorse.”
Rex Heuermann, 62, appeared in court in Riverhead, New York, for his sentencing hearing after confessing to murdering eight women during a reign of terror on Long Island. He is being sentenced for the murders of seven women.
“Sister of Gilgo Beach victim says killer felt women were ‘his to destroy’ and has no remorse.”
“He is a selfish, entitled man who felt like my sister and the others were his to destroy,” Mack said at the start of the hearing, according to CNN. Her sister Valerie Mack was one of Heuermann’s victims.
Heuermann showed no visible reaction as Mack spoke, a chilling new mugshot capturing his expressionless face. The killer’s lack of emotion underscored Mack’s accusation that he lacked the basic humanity to feel remorse for his crimes.
The sentencing marks the end of a long and brutal chapter for the families of the victims, who have waited years for justice. Heuermann’s confession to the murders of eight women brought a measure of closure, but Mack’s words highlighted the enduring pain left by his acts.
As the hearing continued, the quiet of the courtroom was punctuated only by the voices of the victims’ families, demanding that Heuermann hear the full weight of his crimes before judgment was passed.
