Gvardiol signs new Man City deal until 2031 as Shaw faces pay cut at Old Trafford

Josko Gvardiol has agreed a new contract at Manchester City until the summer of 2031, ending speculation about a move to Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. The 24-year-old defender, who won City’s Player of the Season award in 2024-25, had been linked with both European giants but will now extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium beyond his current deal, which was set to expire in 2028. BBC Sport reported last week that City were positive about talks, and the agreement comes as Gvardiol prepares for the World Cup with Croatia, who face England in their opening game on Wednesday.

Gvardiol’s 2025-26 campaign was disrupted by a broken leg sustained in January, which sidelined him for four months. He returned to Premier League action in May, playing 58 minutes against Crystal Palace and the final 12 minutes against Aston Villa. Despite the injury, his new contract secures his future at City until 2031.

Across Manchester, Luke Shaw faces a different contract reality. The Manchester United left-back, who turns 30, will reportedly need to take a pay cut to sign a new deal. Shaw currently earns around £200,000 per week, and United will not offer the same wages in a new proposal, according to The Sun. His current contract runs until 2027, with United holding an option to extend by a further year. If agreement is reached, it would mirror the one-year extension the club gave Harry Maguire earlier this year, taking him to 2027 with an additional 12-month option.

Shaw was a key figure in United’s third-place Premier League finish last season, starting all 38 league matches and playing the full 90 minutes in 23 of them. With head coach Michael Carrick now in permanent charge and left-back Tyrell Malacia departing as a free agent, United are reportedly exploring the signing of a new left-back. Shaw’s future remains uncertain as he enters the final year of his current terms unless the club triggers the extension.
