Harry Kane double keeps England's World Cup dream alive in dramatic comeback

England's World Cup dream is still alive, but only just. After a first half that threatened humiliating elimination, Harry Kane scored twice in quick succession to snatch a 2-1 victory over DR Congo in Atlanta, booking a round-of-16 clash with co-hosts Mexico.

The African nation took a shock lead early on through Brian Cipenga, a goal that silenced the England fans and left Thomas Tuchel's side staring at an early exit in their first knockout match. DR Congo defended courageously, holding their advantage until the 75th minute.

Then came the captain. Kane headed in from Anthony Gordon's cross to equalise, and within minutes he struck again, completing a turnaround that rescued England from what would have been a humiliating defeat. The two goals kept alive the prospect of ending 60 years of hurt and becoming the first England men's team to win a trophy on foreign soil.

England now face a daunting last-16 tie against Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca at 1am UK time on Monday. The winner will meet either Brazil or Norway in the quarter-finals. According to FIFA rankings, England face the hardest ever run to win the World Cup, but they have avoided European rivals Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium on their side of the draw.

Concerns remain over a defence that looked vulnerable, but for now, the Three Lions march on.
