Wonderwall sing-along one of my favourite England moments – Kane

Harry Kane described singing Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’ with fans after England’s 4-2 win over Croatia in Dallas as “one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt”. The captain scored twice in the opening World Cup victory, before leading his team-mates on a lap of honour in the 70,000-capacity stadium as supporters belted out the 1995 hit. “Everyone knew the words,” Kane said on the Lions’ Den podcast. “That was a really special moment.”

Kane’s double took him level with Gary Lineker’s England record of 10 World Cup goals, and he revealed that David Beckham – his childhood idol from the same Chingford area – sent him a voice note before and after the match to congratulate him on reaching 115 caps. “To have the same number of caps as him is pretty mind-blowing,” Kane said. “He knew how hard it was to reach that level.”

The 32-year-old, one of three players – alongside Jordan Pickford and John Stones – remaining from the 2018 squad, said Thomas Tuchel’s side feels “a little bit different”. Under Gareth Southgate, England reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024, and Tuchel has spoken of wanting to continue that connection. Kane noted a “freshness” about the squad, with “hunger, desire and excitement” in training. “There’s competition for places but no anger – whoever plays will play, and I’ll be ready to make a difference when I get my turn.”

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford paid tribute to the fans, saying he was sure there would be more support at the next two group games. England’s next match is against Ghana in Boston on Tuesday at 21:00 BST. Kane, who had earlier said he was “not getting carried away”, finished: “We love that stuff. We are not disconnected from the fans.”
