Jordan Henderson in hospital after freak wrist injury celebrating England's World Cup win over Mexico

England midfielder Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital with a “really bad” wrist injury after a freak fall during post-match celebrations following England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium. The 36-year-old Brentford player appeared to land awkwardly after tumbling from an advertising hoarding and was pictured leaving the pitch on a stretcher after receiving oxygen. Manager Thomas Tuchel told BBC One: “Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad. It’s a quite serious injury and it doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.” Henderson will not travel back with the team; he is being accompanied by a member of England’s support staff and remained in hospital overnight for further assessment, casting major doubt on his participation for the rest of the tournament. His World Cup involvement had already been limited to just six minutes as a substitute in England’s Group L win over Panama. The injury adds to a lengthy medical history that includes a metatarsal fracture while on loan at Coventry City in 2009, persistent plantar fasciitis in 2015, a broken bone in his right foot requiring surgery later that year, and season-ending knee ligament damage in April 2016. England’s next match is a quarter-final against Norway in Miami on Saturday. Tuchel will also be without Reece James, who picked up a hamstring injury in England’s opening match, and Jarell Quansah, who received a straight red card against Mexico.
