Hughes to leave Liverpool as Roma prepare Greenwood bid

Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes is not expected to sign a new deal and will leave the club when his contract expires next June, BBC Sport understands – a departure that clears the path for a move to Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, where he is likely to link up with former Bournemouth colleague Simon Francis.

Hughes, who oversaw the appointment of Arne Slot in 2024 and his subsequent sacking last season, is currently focused on the summer transfer window alongside new head coach Andoni Iraola. The pair worked together previously at Bournemouth, where Hughes recommended Iraola for the head coach role in 2023. Liverpool have already signed French defender Jeremy Jacquet and Spanish winger Victor Munoz, while Harvey Elliott returns from a loan at Aston Villa. The club remain interested in Paris St-Germain’s Bradley Barcola but face disappointment over Ivory Coast star Yan Diomande, who prefers a move to PSG.

Meanwhile, Roma are preparing an opening bid for former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, who has scored 48 goals in 81 games for Marseille since joining for £26.7m. According to Sky Italia, the Italian club will offer around €45m (£38.5m) including bonuses and a sell-on clause, with personal terms already agreed on a five-year deal. Marseille are holding out for approximately €55m but are willing to negotiate.

Greenwood, 24, was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour before those charges were dropped. He had indicated in May he hoped to stay at Marseille, saying at the Ligue 1 awards: “This season has been difficult at times for us as a team … but, individually, I think I’ve had a good season. … I hope I will be able to stay put here.” England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed he is no longer considering Greenwood, while former Jamaica boss Steve McLaren said the player has not committed to any national team.
