A woman who lives near the scene in Huyton described hearing a 'bang so loud I thought a lorry had overturned'. Looking out of her window, she saw smoke everywhere. It was around 1.45am on Friday when the black Seat Cupra, heading from Liverpool towards Knowsley, came off the road on Liverpool Road and collided with a lamppost.
Emergency services arrived, but four men – two aged 23, one aged 24 and one aged 26 – were pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 2am. A fifth man, a 27-year-old passenger, was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition. Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

Supt Paul Holden of Merseyside Police said: 'First and foremost our thoughts are with the family of the four men who sadly lost their lives. This is a truly devastating moment for their families and loved ones, and it is now our priority to get answers for them on how the collision occurred.' He appealed for witnesses, doorbell footage or dashcam footage of the Seat Cupra.
The road remains cordoned off, with Liverpool Road and East Prescot Road closed in both directions from Finch Lane to Princess Drive. Police said the closures are likely to remain in place all weekend. A temporary flight restriction zone has also been imposed above the area, specifically banning drones while investigators examine the scene.
