Cristian Romero helped Argentina reach a second straight World Cup final this month – but the Tottenham captain could be heading to Italy before the summer is out. Inter Milan have entered talks with Spurs over a potential deal for the centre-back, whose representatives have already been in Milan for discussions this weekend.
Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, confirmed the club’s interest. “It’s definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club,” he told Sky Italy. “These things take some time but there’s definitely interest. Let’s see.”
“Inter Milan confirm talks to sign Tottenham captain Cristian Romero after he helped Argentina reach World Cup final.”
Romero, who joined Tottenham in 2021, has made 156 appearances and captained the side to Europa League glory last year. But the 2025-26 campaign was tempestuous, with the defender serving four separate suspensions. With Jan Paul van Hecke signed for £52m from Brighton and Marcos Senesi arriving as a free agent in June to bolster Roberto De Zerbi’s defensive options, Spurs are now prepared to let their captain depart.
The 28-year-old, who helped Argentina to the World Cup final where they were beaten by Spain, has yet to report for pre-season. His departure would end a five-year spell that brought both silverware and controversy, as Inter push to secure a significant fee for one of Europe’s most sought-after centre-backs.
