Iran has threatened retaliation against Ukraine after a strike on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea killed one sailor and wounded another, escalating tensions that risk merging the wars in the Middle East and Europe.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the Saturday attack on a ship he said was transporting military cargo between Iran and Russia. Tehran swiftly condemned the action, with Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi posting on X that Zelensky “has attacked an Iranian commercial vessel, killing a sailor” in “a blatant UN Charter violation done at Israel’s behest to drag Europe into its war.” Addressing EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Araghchi made clear that “what the freeloader in Kyiv did CANNOT GO UNANSWERED.”

Iranian deputy parliament speaker Ali Nikzad echoed the warning, stating that “any location used as a launching point for aggression against our country and territory will undoubtedly be considered a legitimate target for our armed forces, and the Ukrainian government’s reckless action will not go unanswered.” He specifically warned Ukraine, Britain and Bulgaria against supporting US military actions.
Zelensky also accused Russia of supplying Iran with satellite images of US targets, writing on X: “Since the beginning of July, we have recorded active Russian satellite surveillance of the Gulf states and US military facilities located there. These images subsequently appear in Iran.” He noted a “clear correlation” between Russian satellite imagery and Iranian strikes.
The two countries lie just 1,200 miles apart, well within ballistic missile range, stoking fears of the conflicts merging into a wider war. The threat comes as the US bombing campaign against Iran, which had intensified over 13 nights, was abruptly suspended late on Friday, with no attacks reported on Saturday or Sunday. Iran’s Health Ministry says 3,434 people have been killed since the war began, including 55 during the recent escalation. Eighteen American service members are believed to have died since the start of the conflict.
Russia’s Lavrov offered condolences over the sailor’s death and stressed the need “to put an end to such adventures by the Kyiv regime,” according to a statement on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website. Araghchi, meanwhile, informed Lavrov of “continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tension in the Middle East” – a claim at odds with the vow of retaliation that now hangs over the region.
