US vice-president JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, have announced the birth of their fourth child – the first baby born to a sitting vice-president in more than 150 years.
Alec Neel Vance arrived on Sunday morning, Vance said in a statement on social media. “Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” he wrote, thanking military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center.

The newborn joins siblings Ewan, nine, Vivek, six, and four-year-old Mirabel, bringing the family to six. The couple, who met as students at Yale Law School in 2010, have been married for over a decade.
The last time a vice-president welcomed a child while in office was 1870, when Schuyler Colfax and his second wife, Ellen, had a son, Schuyler Colfax III. Before that, John C Calhoun and his wife, Floride, had a son in 1829, according to the White House Historical Association.
Vance, a former US Marine turned Republican politician, has been one of the most vocal advocates for higher birth rates in the Trump administration. He wrote in his recently published book that Usha had initially been reluctant to have another child but her mind changed after the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, a friend of Vance, last year. “Not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” he wrote. “One life was stolen from us, but another was given.”
Speaking at the 2025 March for Life anti-abortion rally in Washington, Vance declared: “I want more babies in the United States of America.” The vice-president, 41, and Usha Vance, 40 – the daughter of Indian immigrants – have often been seen travelling with their children, who board Air Force Two in their pyjamas for overnight flights. Her pregnancy, announced in January, drew unusual attention given the rarity of high-ranking US officials expanding their families in office. The newest arrival marks a small baby boom among top members of Donald Trump’s administration.
