JJ Gabriel can break Man Utd records after Premier League fixture release ends age ban

Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel now knows exactly when he could become the club’s youngest-ever player, after the Premier League fixtures for the 2026/27 season were released, lifting the age restriction that kept him sidelined last term.

The 15-year-old prodigy, who had already trained with the senior squad, was blocked from appearing in the 2025/26 campaign because Premier League rules require all eligible players to have turned 15 on or before August 31. Gabriel’s birthday falls in October 2025, making him ineligible for the entire previous season.

But with his 16th birthday coming on 6 October, the new schedule gives Gabriel an eight-week window from the start of the season to make his senior debut and surpass David Gaskell’s record as the youngest-ever Manchester United player. Gaskell was 16 years and 19 days old when he played in the 1956 FA Charity Shield.

The fixtures offering that chance include away matches at Hull City (22 August), Ipswich Town (29 August), Everton (5 September), Fulham (19 September) and Leeds United (17 October), plus home games against Manchester City (12 September), Tottenham (10 October) and Bournemouth (24 October).

Gabriel also has until 26 June 2027 to eclipse Angel Gomes as United’s youngest Premier League debutant – Gomes was 16 years and 263 days old when he first appeared. That leaves him the entire campaign to claim the record, even if he waits until the final game.

One milestone remains out of reach: Ethan Nwaneri’s all-time youngest Premier League debutant record, set at 15 years and 181 days in 2022, would have required Gabriel to play before 4 April 2026.

Elsewhere in football, Coventry will face champions Arsenal in the opening match of the new season, while the summer transfer window is under way across Europe’s top five leagues, with Patrick Wimmer, Andy Robertson and Geovany Quenda among those on the move.
