Kane and Haaland set for World Cup showdown as England face Norway

From the moment Harry Kane’s proposed move to Manchester City in August 2021 broke down, his career has been linked with that of Erling Haaland. The giant Norwegian arrived the next summer and fired City to a Treble, while Kane remained at Tottenham, trophy-less. Fast forward a few years and the two face off on Saturday in a World Cup quarter-final, central to their countries’ hopes. Only now, the narrative has shifted.

Since moving to Bayern Munich in 2023, Kane has twice won the Bundesliga, the European Golden Shoe, and has six goals already at this tournament. His 85 international goals have made him the driving force behind England’s bid to end their long wait for silverware. Witness his two against DR Congo in the last 32, and a nerveless penalty at Azteca Stadium to see off Mexico. But a World Cup quarter-final returns Kane to arguably his lowest ebb: a missed late penalty against France at the Qatar finals. Now with 120 England appearances—second only to Peter Shilton—he can erase that blot.

Harry Kane and Erling Haaland face off in World Cup quarter-final, both in stunning form.

Haaland, despite being born in Leeds, would love nothing more than to stop him. The Norway striker has seven goals in his first World Cup, netting the match winner in all four appearances so far (he was rested against France with qualification secured). He bested old rival Gabriel by scoring twice against Brazil in the last 16. His international record is astonishing: 62 goals in 51 matches, at a ludicrous rate of one every 71 minutes, including goals in 14 straight games. "That was a rocket," Kane said after a winner for England, but Haaland’s superhuman statistics rival even Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

Any comparison starts with goals, and these two are arguably the very best. Since moving to Germany, Kane’s numbers have gone stratospheric, besting Haaland’s every season and establishing him as a Ballon d’Or frontrunner. Yet Haaland has 27 goals in his 14-game scoring streak. On Saturday, one of them will lead his nation into the semi-finals. The other will go home, haunted by another missed opportunity – or the ghost of a Norwegian giant.
