Kane fluffs late sitter as England held to frustrating Ghana goalless draw

Harry Kane had the chance to salvage three points deep into stoppage time. Instead, England’s captain sent a presentable opportunity over the crossbar, condemning his side to a 0-0 draw with Ghana that left the World Cup Group L standings finely poised.

Thomas Tuchel cut a frustrated figure on the touchline throughout an underwhelming evening in Boston. His team dominated possession — 80 percent in the first half alone, with 347 passes to Ghana’s 98 — but rarely troubled the Black Stars, who sat deep and used a physical, stop-start approach to smother England’s momentum.

“I remain positive,” midfielder Declan Rice said after the match, despite the stalemate. Yet for long spells, England’s attacking play was laboured. They took too long to create chances, and when openings did appear, the quality of the final ball was lacking. Anthony Gordon should have shot after 15 minutes but passed to Elliot Anderson, who took a touch too many and saw his effort blocked.

England’s first shot on target did not arrive until the 57th minute. By then, Ghana’s tough-tackling tactics had already left Jude Bellingham, Rice, Reece James, Kane and Anderson on the deck multiple times. Anderson was targeted again early in the second half, taken down twice in the first 10 minutes. Kane was scythed down by Thomas Partey in the 63rd minute. “Every single one killed England’s momentum,” noted Thomas Bristow of the Mirror.

Bellingham’s frustration boiled over; he glared at an opponent after one shove in the back. The 22-year-old still has “a little bit of maturing to do,” the match report added.

There were rare moments of incision. Noni Madueke’s reverse ball to Reece James created a good opening, only for James’ cutback to Gordon to be blocked. Later, Madueke drove past his full-back and lifted the ball into the box, but Rice headed over. Quick passing unlocked Kane at the end of the first half, but his shot was blocked.

Then, at the death, Kane’s big miss. The striker, usually so reliable, fluffed his lines when it mattered most. Tuchel now has work to do ahead of England’s next group fixture, with the threat of failing to top the group looming large.
