England goalkeeper Khiara Keating has turned down a new contract at Manchester City and is uncertain about her future, while defender Josko Gvardiol has agreed a deal until 2031 to end speculation over a move to Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.
Keating, a 21-year-old academy graduate and lifelong City fan, could leave this summer in pursuit of regular game time. She started only four Women’s Super League games last season, competing with Japan’s Ayaka Yamashita for the number one shirt. Despite limited minutes, she was part of City’s first WSL title in a decade and their FA Cup victory over Brighton.

The goalkeeper has interest from elsewhere in the WSL, with Liverpool among those keen. Liverpool boss Gareth Taylor worked with Keating during his time at City, handing her a WSL debut and overseeing her breakout 2023-24 season when, aged 19, she became the youngest goalkeeper to win the WSL Golden Glove with nine clean sheets.
Keating was called up to the England squad for June’s World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Ukraine but missed out with a concussion. She was part of England’s triumphant Euro 2025 squad and made her senior debut in October against Brazil but lost her place in Sarina Wiegman’s squad at the start of 2026. She will want to regain her spot before next year’s Women’s World Cup.
Meanwhile, Josko Gvardiol has agreed a new contract at Manchester City until the summer of 2031, sources have told BBC Sport. The 24-year-old Croatian defender’s previous deal was due to expire in 2028, but he is now set to remain at Etihad Stadium, ending interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Gvardiol won City’s Player of the Season award in 2024-25 but played only 25 games in all competitions last season after sustaining a broken leg in January. He returned to Premier League action in May, featuring for 58 minutes against Crystal Palace and 12 minutes against Aston Villa. He is currently preparing for the World Cup with Croatia, who face England in their opener.
