King Charles rejects Harry's late bid to stay at Buckingham Palace amid legal fears

Prince Harry arrived in London on Monday night without his wife or children, only to discover that his last‑minute U‑turn over accommodation at Buckingham Palace had been rejected by the King – who had lost patience with his son’s indecision.

On Monday morning, moments after the Duke of Sussex’s team announced he would be staying at the palace during his visit, palace sources moved to clarify that this was not the case. The invitation had been accepted too late, they said, and Harry would revert to alternative private accommodation.

King Charles rejected Prince Harry's last-minute request to stay at Buckingham Palace after the duke changed his mind.

The saga began days earlier when Harry initially accepted an offer to stay, then declined it in writing on Saturday, and subsequently tried to accept again. By then, palace aides said, the appropriate hospitality and staffing could not be made available because the household required a minimum period of notice. Crucially, there was also concern that the High Court ruling on Harry’s privacy claim against the publisher of the Daily Mail, due to be handed down on Tuesday, could “compromise” the King if his son was staying at a royal residence. Courtiers wanted to ensure distance between the palace, the legal ruling and the duke’s reaction to it.

Harry had asked to stay only on Tuesday, the day of the ruling. When he lost his earlier legal battle with the Home Office over security provision, he described it as “an establishment stitch‑up”. Palace aides are keen to protect the King’s constitutional position: as monarch, he cannot be seen to be close to decisions made by his courts.

Royal aides said they had had enough of the constantly shifting sands and considered the delay discourteous. In response, the furious duke questioned whether the offer of accommodation was ever genuine. A source close to him asked whether the offer “was ever intended to be available once the Duke sought to take it up”. They insisted that Harry had acted in good faith and that, after being informed that he and his family would not receive police protection, he had spent most of last week making alternative arrangements.

Harry is thought to have been liaising directly with his father about the visit, which may have complicated matters. But by Monday evening, the duke was in the UK, alone, and searching for a place to stay – a dramatic end to what began as a simple request to sleep under the same roof as his father.
