Frank Lampard signs new Coventry contract until 2029 ahead of Premier League return

Frank Lampard has signed a new contract with Coventry City until 2029, committing his future to the club as they prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years.

The 48-year-old led the Sky Blues to the Championship title last season, winning 28 matches – the most Coventry have ever managed in a league season – and ending a quarter-century wait for top-flight football. His previous deal was due to expire at the end of next season, and Lampard attracted interest from other clubs, including Fulham, over the summer.

“After the incredible work of everybody to get promoted and win the Championship, it was important to enjoy the moment, and we certainly did as a city,” Lampard said. “Our job then as staff, and for the players of course, is to firstly recharge but also focus on what we want to do and what we need to for next season. There’s a lot of work to do on and off the pitch as a football club, so those things have been ongoing.”

Lampard replaced Mark Robins as Coventry manager in November 2024 when they were 17th in the Championship, just two points above the relegation zone. He guided them to fifth place and a play-off semi-final in his first season, before leading them to the title the following year.

Coventry will begin their Premier League campaign with a Friday night trip to the champions, Arsenal, on 21 August. Their opening home fixture, the first top-flight match at their stadium since 2001, will be against Hull City. The pick of the Boxing Day schedule is a visit for Lampard to his former club Chelsea.

Lampard, a former Chelsea and England midfielder who scored 177 Premier League goals from midfield before moving into management, said: “I’m looking forward to getting back with the players, to see them all and get ready for the new season.”

His new contract comes as Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky also signed an improved deal. The 23-year-old Czech, signed from Slavia Prague for about £12.5m in January 2025, endured a difficult first full season, memorably being substituted just 17 minutes into a Champions League tie at Atletico Madrid after conceding three goals. But after Roberto De Zerbi became Spurs manager, Kinsky played the final seven Premier League games as they avoided relegation.

De Zerbi said: “Toni was outstanding over the final seven games of the season and a key part of what we achieved in that period. He has earned this new contract, not only with his performances but also his professionalism and desire to improve.”

Spurs have not revealed the length or terms of Kinsky’s new deal, but he could start the season as first choice with Guglielmo Vicario linked with a return to Italy and Inter Milan.
