Frank Lampard has signed a contract extension at Coventry City until 2029, committing his future to the club as they prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years. The 48-year-old former Chelsea and England midfielder led the Sky Blues to the Championship title last season, winning 28 matches – the most Coventry have ever managed in a league campaign – to end a quarter-century exile from the top flight.
Lampard’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of next season, and the manager attracted interest from Fulham this summer. But he has now pledged his long-term future to the club, which begins its Premier League season with a Friday night trip to champions Arsenal on 21 August.
“Frank Lampard signs Coventry City contract until 2029 ahead of Premier League return after 25 years.”
“After the incredible work of everybody to get promoted and win the Championship, it was important to enjoy the moment, and we certainly did as a city,” Lampard said. “Our job then as staff, and for the players of course, is to firstly recharge but also focus on what we want to do and what we need to for next season. There’s a lot of work to do on and off the pitch as a football club, so those things have been ongoing.”
Lampard replaced Mark Robins as Coventry manager in November 2024, when the club were 17th in the Championship, just two points above the relegation zone. He won 16 of the remaining 29 matches that season, leading them to a fifth‑place finish and a play‑off semi‑final, which they lost 3‑2 on aggregate to Sunderland. The following season, Coventry stormed to the Championship title, securing promotion with a record league win tally.
The new manager’s first taste of Premier League football will be a daunting opener at the Emirates, where Arsenal – who ended a 22‑year wait for a league title last month – will be aiming to start their title defence in style. Coventry’s fellow promoted clubs also face tough starts: Hull host Manchester United on the Saturday, while Ipswich entertain Sunderland that day. Other eye‑catching opening‑weekend fixtures include Andoni Iraola taking Liverpool to Newcastle on 23 August and Manchester City, without Pep Guardiola, hosting Bournemouth.
The pick of the Boxing Day schedule is a visit for Lampard to Chelsea, the club where he scored 177 Premier League goals from midfield before moving into management. Lampard started his managerial career at Derby County before spells at Chelsea (twice) and Everton.
Coventry’s first top‑flight home match since 2001 will be against Hull, while Arsenal’s early fixtures include trips to Aston Villa and Brighton, and a home match against Chelsea. The season concludes on 30 May, with Arsenal at home to Brighton, City at Sunderland, and Liverpool hosting Iraola’s former club Bournemouth.
