Coventry's Lampard signs new deal until 2029 as fixtures pit Sky Blues against Arsenal on opening night

Frank Lampard has committed his future to Coventry City until 2029, signing a new contract just weeks before the club's first Premier League campaign in a quarter of a century. The 48-year-old, who led the Sky Blues to the Championship title last season, had attracted interest from other clubs including Fulham this summer, but has now pledged his long-term future to the Ricoh Arena outfit.

Lampard's reward for ending Coventry's 25-year top-flight exile is a fresh deal that runs to 2029, extending his previous agreement which was due to expire at the end of next season. The former Chelsea and England midfielder replaced Mark Robins in November 2024 when the club were 17th in the Championship, just two points above the relegation zone. He masterminded a remarkable turnaround, winning 16 of the remaining 29 league matches to finish fifth and reach the play-offs, where they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Sunderland. Undeterred, Lampard led Coventry to the Championship title the following campaign, winning a club-record 28 league matches and securing promotion.

"After the incredible work of everybody to get promoted and win the Championship, it was important to enjoy the moment, and we certainly did as a city," Lampard said. "Our job then as staff, and for the players of course, is to firstly recharge but also focus on what we want to do and what we need to for next season. There's a lot of work to do on and off the pitch as a football club, so those things have been ongoing."

Coventry's return to the top flight begins with a daunting Friday night trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on 21 August. The champions, who ended their own 22-year title drought last season, will provide a stern test for Lampard's side. The match kicks off a packed opening weekend that also includes fellow promoted clubs Hull hosting Manchester United on Saturday 22 August and Ipswich entertaining Sunderland the same day.

Other eye-catching fixtures on the opening weekend include Andoni Iraola taking Liverpool to Newcastle on 23 August for his debut match, and Manchester City starting life after Pep Guardiola at home to Bournemouth on the same day. Brentford host Tottenham, Everton welcome Crystal Palace, and Leeds visit Nottingham Forest. Aston Villa travel to Brighton before new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso begins at Fulham on Monday 24 August.

Lampard's first top-flight match at Coventry's home stadium since 2001 will be against Hull on a weekend yet to be confirmed. The pick of the Boxing Day fixtures sees Lampard return to Stamford Bridge to face his former club Chelsea. The season concludes on 30 May, with Coventry travelling to Hull on the final day.

"I'm looking forward to getting back with the players, to see them all and get ready for the new season," Lampard added, as Coventry prepare for a campaign that has already captured the imagination of a city starved of Premier League football for a generation.
