Leeds United have lost two goalkeepers on free transfers to Premier League rivals, with Karl Darlow joining Manchester United and Illan Meslier moving to Arsenal. Darlow, 35, signed a two-year contract at Old Trafford with an option for a further season after his Leeds deal expired, prompting the club to confirm: “Despite the offer of a new deal to remain in West Yorkshire, the goalkeeper wished to explore a different challenge.” The Wales international, who made 279 club appearances and finished last season as Daniel Farke’s first-choice keeper, said: “I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United. I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards.” His arrival is likely to push Altay Bayindir towards the exit, while Darlow is expected to deputise for first-choice Senne Lammens, who is on a three-week break after Belgium’s World Cup campaign, leaving Darlow to feature in pre-season starting against Wrexham on 18 July.
Hours earlier, Arsenal confirmed the free signing of Illan Meslier from Leeds on a two-year deal with a one-year option. The 26-year-old Frenchman made 215 appearances over seven seasons, keeping 70 clean sheets, but lost his starting spot at Elland Road. “I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again,” he said. Meslier joins as third-choice behind Golden Glove winner David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga, whose future is in doubt. Should Kepa depart, Meslier could step up to number two, likely pushing 20-year-old Tommy Setford out on loan. For Leeds, the simultaneous exits of their senior goalkeepers – both on free transfers – leaves a void that the club will now have to fill.
