Lewis Hall wants Newcastle exit after breakdown in relationship with Eddie Howe – and Manchester United are keen

Lewis Hall wants to leave Newcastle United after a breakdown in his relationship with manager Eddie Howe, with Manchester United circling for the 21-year-old left-back.

The England Under-21 international is understood to have blamed Howe for costing him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, after being switched to right‑back shortly before the squad was named. Hall was substituted at half‑time during a 2‑1 defeat to Bournemouth in April and then dropped to the bench for the next two games against Arsenal and Brighton. According to the Sun, the former Chelsea youngster was involved in a row with Howe, and some at Newcastle fear their working relationship has come to an end.

Manchester United are monitoring the situation closely. The Red Devils are in the market for a long-term left‑back with Luke Shaw out of contract next year, and Hall would be open to a switch to Old Trafford, according to the Mirror.

Newcastle deny there has been a falling out. The club insist Hall has not handed in a transfer request and remains on good terms with Howe, with the defender under contract at St James’ Park until 2029. However, Hall’s frustration has been simmering. Howe himself said: “My wish is for all the players who want to go, to go. The World Cup and representing their countries is a huge moment for them so my first thought is to them.”

The Magpies have already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £70m, easing their financial fears, but the club are reluctant to lose more key assets. Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães have also been linked with moves, and Newcastle would prefer to keep them rather than cash in. The decision to sell Alexander Isak late last summer had a lasting impact on their season, with the saga playing out publicly and forcing Newcastle to juggle replacements.

With Hall’s relationship with Howe apparently fractured, and Manchester United ready to pounce, the coming weeks will determine whether the left‑back remains a Newcastle player or follows the path of Gordon and Isak out of the door.
