Liverpool complete Victor Munoz signing and step up Yan Diomande pursuit

Liverpool have signed Spain winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna for his 40m euro (£34.5m) release clause, triggering a six-year deal that marks the first acquisition under new head coach Andoni Iraola — and immediately turned their attention to securing a package worth around 100m euros (£86m) for RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande.

Munoz, 22, who is part of Spain’s World Cup squad, underwent his medical in the United States on Wednesday. The fee will be paid in two instalments, with Real Madrid — who retained a 50% sell-on clause when they sold the winger to Osasuna for 5m euros in July 2025 — pocketing half of the transfer. Munoz, a graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, made just two brief substitute appearances for Real Madrid before moving to Osasuna. He scored seven goals and provided five assists in 36 appearances last season.

Liverpool faced competition from Newcastle — who were in advanced talks after selling Anthony Gordon to Barcelona — as well as Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid. La Liga expert Phil Minshull described Munoz as “one of the pearls of Spanish football” with an excellent work-rate in attack and defence. Munoz chose Anfield after Iraola replaced Arne Slot, who was sacked earlier this month following a fifth-place finish with no silverware.

With the World Cup ongoing, Liverpool have moved quickly to target Yan Diomande, the 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger who is also playing at the tournament. The Reds have told Leipzig they will pay a package worth about 100m euros (£86m), but the German club want more and have no desire to let the teenager leave this window. However, there is an understanding that if Diomande performs well at the World Cup, his transfer value could increase, and a package in excess of 130m euros (£112m) would change Leipzig’s stance. Diomande scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga last season. Paris St-Germain are also interested but have yet to make an offer, leaving Liverpool in pole position.

Should the Diomande deal be completed, the Mirror reports that Liverpool have already decided their next target: Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi. The Reds are determined to bounce back after last season’s disappointment, with significant investment expected this summer under Iraola.
