Lloyds, Barclays and Halifax crash: hundreds unable to make payments

Hundreds of customers at three of Britain’s biggest banks were locked out of their accounts today, unable to make payments or transfer money, as a wave of technical failures hit Lloyds, Barclays and Halifax simultaneously.

Problems began around midday, according to Downdetector data, with more than 900 reports logged at the peak. Customers described being unable to withdraw cash from ATMs, send funds via apps, or complete bank transfers. Some received error messages warning payment had failed – only to later discover multiple transfers had gone through.

One Lloyds customer wrote: “Is anyone else having any issues with Lloyds? I can’t get money from the ATM nor make any bank transfers to pay etc. My partner is also having the same issues with her Lloyds account. Their helpline has a 40-minute delay – so something is definitely not right.”

Lloyds acknowledged the disruption, telling customers it was “investigating an issue affecting Faster Payments, which may cause delays”. The bank repeatedly urged customers not to resend payments, warning it “could result in a duplicate payment”.

Barclays customers reported being unable to receive external payments, while Halifax users struggled to transfer funds. One Halifax customer said: “I tried to transfer some money and it kept saying error unable to complete, I tried a few times and got the same message, now it’s done multiple transfers?”

The outages left helplines jammed, with Lloyds warning of a 40-minute wait. By 7:42pm Lloyds was still investigating, but at 8:41pm it confirmed payments were “working as normal”. Barclays’ own status page later showed no issues with its app, international payments or cash withdrawals. The number of reported problems dropped sharply by 7:20pm.

The scale of the disruption – affecting three major high street banks on the same day – raises questions about the resilience of Britain’s payment infrastructure, though the banks said only that they were investigating and fixing individual issues.
