Qatar's Madibo gets five-game ban for breaking Canadian Kone's leg

Assim Madibo stood over Ismael Kone, the Canadian midfielder writhing on the turf in Vancouver, his left leg bent at an angle that told its own story. The Qatar international had just been sent off for the challenge that ended Kone’s World Cup – and now, six days later, Fifa’s disciplinary committee has handed him a five-match ban for serious foul play.

The suspension, which is subject to appeal, stems from the 29-year-old Madibo’s tackle during Qatar’s 6-0 defeat to Canada last Thursday. Kone, a 24-year-old former Watford midfielder now plying his trade for Italian side Sassuolo, suffered fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his lower left leg. He underwent surgery shortly after the game and was visited in hospital by Madibo – a gesture that did little to mitigate the punishment.

For Canada, the injury has robbed them of a key player ahead of their final group game against Switzerland on Wednesday. They sit top of the group and need only a point to secure a place in the last 32, but Kone’s absence leaves a gap in midfield that coach John Herdman must now patch up.

Qatar, meanwhile, face a must-win match against Bosnia-Herzegovina to keep their faint hopes of progressing alive. Madibo will not be part of that effort – his tournament is effectively over, his five-game ban stretching beyond the group stage even if Qatar somehow advance.

The verdict has done little to quell the debate around the challenge, which left a player with a broken leg and a nation’s World Cup dreams damaged. But for now, Fifa’s ruling stands: Madibo will watch from the stands, his ban a stark reminder of the price of a moment’s recklessness.
