Manchester United close to signing free agent Karl Darlow

Manchester United are on the verge of signing veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer, a move that is expected to trigger the departure of Altay Bayindir.

The 35-year-old, who is Wales' current first-choice goalkeeper, left Leeds United at the end of June after making 22 Premier League appearances last season, finishing the campaign as Daniel Farke's first choice.

With Radek Vitek also set to leave, either on loan or permanently after impressing at Bristol City last term, Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick needed additional cover given that 40-year-old Tom Heaton has not played a first-team game since February 2023.

Bayindir spent the majority of last season as understudy to United's first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens, and Darlow's arrival is likely to push him out.

Providing the deal goes through as expected, Darlow will be involved in United's pre-season campaign, which begins against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July.

The move represents a clear-out of backup goalkeepers at Old Trafford, with Carrick reshaping his squad ahead of the new campaign.
