Marcus Rashford’s World Cup ended with a 6-4 victory over France in the third-place play-off, but the forward now returns to a far more uncertain contest: whether his club future lies at Manchester United.
In a social media post after England’s best World Cup performance since 1966, the 28-year-old said: “Disappointments are guaranteed in football … Keep believing in us. Our time will come.” He added: “Now it’s time for me to rest, reflect, spend some quality time with family and friends, and come back a better version of myself.”

‘Reflect’ is the operative word. Rashford, who has 77 England caps and just won La Liga during a loan spell at Barcelona, is entering what should be the prime of his career. But his club future is clouded by a complex contract situation.
Rashford is contracted to Manchester United until 2028 on £325,000 a week, making him the club’s top earner – a significant strain at a time when minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is trying to control salary costs. Barcelona had an option to turn his loan into a permanent transfer for £26m, but the deadline passed in mid-June without being activated. Another clause allowing other clubs – except Liverpool and Manchester City – to buy him for £40m expired earlier in July, and no one triggered it. Sources close to the player say it was illogical to think a club would offer more than Barcelona would have paid.
Despite suggestions he is relaxed about returning to United, there is history between Rashford and manager Ruben Amorim. The coach fell out with the forward within weeks of his arrival from Sporting, though sources now say there is “not the same confrontational relationship”. Mirror Football reports Rashford “could even be set to remain at the club”.
Rashford is now entitled to a three-week break. Unless his situation changes, he will return to United just as they begin a six-day training camp in the Republic of Ireland, ahead of a historic friendly against Leeds at Croke Park on 12 August.
The question remains: at 28, does Rashford’s prime belong to Old Trafford or elsewhere?
