England fans have Jordan Pickford to thank for an epic free food deal from McDonald’s, launching today as the Three Lions prepare for their World Cup semi-final against Argentina. To celebrate Pickford becoming England’s most-capped player in the Men’s FIFA World Cup, the fast food chain has renamed its Saver Menu the “Saved Menu” in his hometown of Washington, Sunderland. Hungry supporters can grab a quick pre-match meal with free items including the Double Cheeseburger (£2.49), Milkshakes (£2.19) and both the Oreo and Smarties Mini McFlurry (£1.59).
The 8pm kick-off has prompted a wave of early closures across the country, as businesses let staff watch the action. Poundland will shut all 700 of its stores at 7pm this evening – even those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Retailer director Alan Smallman said: “We want to give as many colleagues as possible the chance to watch tonight’s game.” The discount chain has immersed itself in World Cup fever, selling England-themed face paints, bunting and watch party snacks.
“McDonald's gives free food as shops and pubs close early for England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina.”
Smyths Toy Superstore will close even earlier, at 6pm. A post by the retailer read: “The final whistle will blow a little earlier for us this Wednesday.” Electricals giant Currys is also shutting at 7pm, an hour earlier than usual for most stores. Director of stores Matthew Speight noted soaring sales of supersized TVs, beer dispensers and BBQs throughout the tournament, adding: “Fans will still have plenty of time to pop in and pick up a new TV ahead of kick-off.”
Locally, smaller retailers are following suit: Bents Garden & Home in Warrington closes at 6pm, and Budgens in Sherwood at 7:30pm. Restaurants including The Sportsman Inn in Greetland and Chesters Fish and Chip Restaurant and Takeaway in Chesterfield are closing their kitchens early, while some pubs are shutting a couple of hours earlier – The Russell Arms in Aylesbury at 5pm, The Island Pool in Kidderminster at 6pm, and The Ship in East Tilbury at 6pm so staff can watch with their loved ones.
With McDonald’s freebies and early closing times, fans have little excuse not to be glued to the match – or to Pickford’s record-breaking performance.
