Scott McTominay trained with Scotland on Friday, shaking off an upset stomach that had sidelined him a day earlier — a timely recovery as Steve Clarke’s side prepare to face Haiti in their first World Cup match in 28 years.
The Napoli midfielder had missed Thursday’s session and travelled separately from the squad to Boston as a precaution, accompanied by a doctor. But after joining the group on Friday, Clarke declared him “perfect and ready to go”.
“Scott McTominay recovers from upset stomach to train ahead of Scotland's first World Cup match in 28 years against Haiti.”
“I’ve got 26 superstars here,” the head coach said, downplaying the dependence on any individual. “To try to put so much on to one person is not fair… We are delighted with Scott’s abilities and what he can bring to the team. But we are going to need another 15 to bring the same if we want to have a positive tournament.”
Scotland will be without centre-back Scott McKenna for the Haiti match after he missed training all week with a calf issue. The defender is expected to return to training on Monday.
There was a lighter moment during Scotland’s preparations when celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, a keen football fan, took in the training session and received a gift from captain Andy Robertson.
The Tartan Army will descend on Boston Stadium in Foxborough for the Group C opener on Saturday (Sunday, 02:00 BST). Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998 also includes fixtures against Morocco and Brazil.
