Morgan Rogers has become the most expensive British footballer in history after completing a £117m move to Chelsea from Aston Villa – a transfer that immediately triggered a loan move for Alejandro Garnacho in the opposite direction.
Rogers, 24, said his long-awaited reunion with close friend Cole Palmer was a driving force behind the deal. “We've been speaking about this for a while – that we would always love to play together,” he said. “He's been non-stop ringing my phone, texting me. That's probably the most special thing, playing with one of your best friends.”

The club announced the record signing as new manager Xabi Alonso seeks to accommodate both attacking midfielders. Rogers, who shone under Unai Emery at Villa, offers versatility across the front line. Last season he often played on the left of a 4-2-3-1, cutting inside to shoot with his stronger right foot. At 6ft 2in, he combines powerful ball-striking with athleticism and a direct running style. Alonso's system – focused on dominating possession and pressing high – differs from Villa's counter-attacking approach, but the Spaniard is expected to adapt.
The timing is no coincidence. Chelsea are operating close to Uefa's financial limits after being fined £2.6m for breaching regulations, though £1.7m of that can be written off if they reduce spending. The club posted a Premier League record loss of £262m in their 2024-25 accounts, with parent-company liabilities exceeding £1bn. Yet they have raised more than £120m in player sales this summer and project a club-record £700m revenue in their next accounts. Finance expert Kieran Maguire explained Chelsea's strategy: “86% PSR compliance gives a slight advantage. You can spend up to 115% of revenue on player costs. If you're in the 'red zone', you pay a tax instead of facing a points deduction.”
To ease the books, Chelsea loaned Alejandro Garnacho to Villa with a conditional obligation to buy – a move that mirrors the club's tactic of stockpiling talent as an investment. Transfermarkt values Chelsea's squad at £1.3bn, fourth-highest in Europe.
Rogers has signed a six-year contract. His shirt number at Stamford Bridge is expected to be announced shortly.
