Morgan Rogers arrived in London on Monday for a Chelsea medical, hours after returning from the United States with England’s World Cup bronze medal, as the club completed a stunning £117m deal that makes the Aston Villa forward the most expensive English player in history.
The transfer – a club record for Chelsea, surpassing the £107m paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023 – was finalised on Saturday afternoon, shortly before Rogers helped England beat France in the third-place play-off. It also eclipses the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

Chelsea’s move for the 23-year-old, who scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa and won the Europa League last season, had been in the works for more than two years. But the timing surprised many, especially after Chelsea’s 10th-placed Premier League finish. The operation was quietly orchestrated by sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso and co-owner Behdad Eghbali, who has a strong relationship with Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris. Even captain Reece James and Cole Palmer – described by Rogers as “one of my best friends in life” – helped make the case from within the England camp.
Rogers will sign a six-year contract with an option for a further year. The deal includes a 20% sell-on clause for Middlesbrough, who sold Rogers to Villa for £8m (rising to £15m) in February 2024. Middlesbrough believe the resulting £20.4m is the largest sell-on fee in English football.
Arsenal, widely expected to be frontrunners for Rogers, were given the chance to match the bid but declined, sticking to their lower valuation. They will now consider alternatives including Paris St-Germain’s Bradley Barcola and Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi.
Villa, meanwhile, have been busy reshaping their squad. Youri Tielemans departed for Manchester United for £35m, while the Midlands club have signed Brazil midfielder João Gomes from Wolves for £38m and Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for more than £50m. They have also lined up Wolves’ Joao Gomes for £38m.
The arrival of Rogers raises questions about his partnership with Palmer, who was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad while Rogers featured in seven games. Eghbali had acknowledged in April that Chelsea needed “to add more ready-made players at this part of the project, to take (it) to the next level”. The deal signals a recalibration of Chelsea’s transfer tactics as Alonso, who has used both back four and back five at former clubs, builds his squad.
