Morgan Rogers is officially a Chelsea player after finalising a transfer from Aston Villa that makes him the most expensive British footballer in history — a £117m deal that beat Arsenal’s £80m valuation and stunned the Gunners. The England star, 23, has put pen to paper on a contract until 2033 which includes an option for a further year, his capture a first major win for the Blues’ new manager, Xabi Alonso.
Rogers was pursued for over two years by Chelsea, who stole a march on Arsenal when the Gunners were unwilling to move from their valuation of the player. According to sources, Arsenal valued the England international at £80m and were willing to pay a slight premium — but were left stunned when Chelsea agreed to a fee that eclipses the amount Manchester City paid to acquire his World Cup team-mate, Elliot Anderson, by £1m.
“Chelsea sign Morgan Rogers for £117m, making him the most expensive British player in history.”
“I’m so excited,” Rogers said upon finalising his move. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid. I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading.” He revealed that productive talks with Alonso were a decisive factor: “I’ve had a few conversations with him … It very much fits with the way I see the game, the way I want to play, and the way I want to be me, and be free and express myself. Him being a part of that was a massive factor in me being here.”
Rogers came through the youth academy at West Brom before moving to Man City in 2019. He didn’t make a first-team appearance for City and went out on loan to Lincoln, Bournemouth and Blackpool. He joined Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee in 2023, scoring five times in their run to the League Cup semi-finals, before moving to Villa in the following January for £8m, potentially rising to £15m. In all, Rogers made 125 appearances for Villa scoring 31 goals and helping them to the Europa League title last term. On the international stage, he made his senior England debut in November 2004 in a 3-0 victory against Greece in Athens and has played 22 times for his country.
The transfer marks a seismic statement from Chelsea under Alonso — and a bruising defeat for Arsenal, who now must look elsewhere for their summer splash.
