Mason Mount believes his blossoming partnership with Andrey Santos could solve Manchester United's midfield conundrum after the pair impressed in pre-season victories over Wrexham and Rosenborg.
United's engine room has been the subject of intense speculation this summer. The club has already spent £83m to sign Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, while Casemiro departed at the end of his contract in June and Manuel Ugarte has been ruled out for months with a knee injury.

That left manager Michael Carrick expected to add a third midfielder, with Bournemouth's Alex Scott and Tyler Adams, Roma's Manu Kone, and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni all linked. Yet Tchouameni's likely salary and transfer fee contradict United's aim of controlling budgets as they also seek a left-sided player and a forward to support the injured Benjamin Sesko.
But the early evidence of pre-season suggests Carrick may already have the answer. Mount, 27, who joined from Chelsea for £55m in 2023 and endured an injury-hit first two seasons, has formed an effective double act with the 18-year-old Santos.
"I've known Andre for a while," Mount said. "He's a really good player and reads the game very well. He's a little bit more defensive, so it allows me to push on a little bit more and work off him."
Santos has impressed in a deep-lying role, taking the ball off defenders, spotting gaps and pressuring opponents. That has freed Mount to use his creativity and drive forward. "Defensively as well, we're both players that want to get around it, put tackles in, win the ball back and be aggressive," Mount added. "I've really enjoyed it."
Meanwhile, United have sealed what the club called an 'exciting' fourth summer signing, with a package agreed as the pre-season campaign continues. The identity of the player has not been disclosed, but the deal underscores the club's determination to reshape Carrick's squad.
Whether Mount and Santos can sustain their form against stronger opposition remains to be seen. But for now, the partnership offers Carrick a promising foundation — and perhaps saves the need for another big-money midfield arrival.
