Newcastle United have completed the signing of Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba for a fee that could rise to £34m, as the club’s summer rebuild intensifies amid Arsenal’s looming £70m pursuit of Bruno Guimarães.
The 20-year-old Frenchman, who made only 12 competitive starts for Monaco, put pen to paper on a five-year deal after undergoing a medical on Tyneside. “I was very excited when I heard Newcastle were interested in signing me,” Bamba said. “I know about the history of the club and I’ve visited the stadium, which is amazing. I can’t wait to be on the pitch there.”

Bamba becomes Newcastle’s fourth signing aged 20 or under this summer, following Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Touré and Sean Steur. The France youth international is expected to compete with Lewis Miley for the No 6 role vacated when Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham for an initial £92.5m. “Aladji adds a range of qualities to our midfield with huge potential for growth,” said Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. “His development since breaking through at Monaco has been really impressive and is something we believe we can build on.”
The arrival comes as Arsenal intensify their attempts to sign Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães. Reports from London suggest the Gunners are preparing a £70m offer for the Brazil midfielder. However, sources on Tyneside insist that any bid in that region is a “non‑starter”. Newcastle have yet to receive a formal approach, and Guimarães has not submitted a transfer request. He remains under contract at St James’ Park for at least another two years.
Adding to the uncertainty, Guimarães’ agent, Alexis Malavolta, posted a cryptic social media message on Thursday – a photo of himself on a boat with the caption “Always working”. The timing, hours before the £70m bid reports surfaced, has fuelled speculation.
Newcastle’s transfer policy has shifted towards signing players aged 24 or under, costing between £20m and £40m, to comply with Uefa’s squad investment regulations after the club agreed a three-year settlement for breaching spending rules. Bamba, who ranked among Ligue 1’s top five midfielders for duels, tackles and take-ons last season, fits that model.
Whether Howe will have Guimarães to help ease Bamba’s adaptation remains unclear. The 28-year-old is due back from holiday in Brazil next week before joining a training camp in La Manga. Arsenal’s next move could determine whether the new signing will be lining up alongside – or in place of – Newcastle’s midfield talisman.
