Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £34m for Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba, the club's fourth summer signing and the latest evidence of a radical shift in transfer policy that prioritises potential over proven pedigree.
The 20-year-old Frenchman, who made his senior debut only last August, is due on Tyneside on Thursday for a medical and to sign a long-term contract. Bamba ranked among Ligue 1's top five midfielders for duels won (9.1 per game), tackles (3.6), successful take-ons (1.6) and aerial duels won (1.9) last season, despite having made just 12 competitive starts for Monaco.

His arrival follows that of 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax, with Newcastle having sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham last month. Another target, Freiburg's Johan Manzambi, opted to join Aston Villa. The club's new approach marks a clear departure from last summer, when they spent £55m on 29-year-old forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford.
“It is certainly hard to imagine the club spending £55m on a 29-year-old again,” noted the BBC, as Newcastle now target players aged 20 and under. Bamba joins Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and Steur – all 20 or younger – in a strategy designed to ensure compliance with Uefa's squad investment regulations after a recent settlement agreement.
Meanwhile, Barcelona confirmed the signing of Germany winger Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth around £19m plus add-ons, with the 24-year-old signing until 2031. Adeyemi, who scored 36 goals in 146 appearances for Dortmund, will be reunited with former national team coach Hansi Flick.
Newcastle are also in discussions with Liverpool over a tribute to Kevin Keegan before the clubs meet at St James' Park on 23 August, following the former England striker's death at the age of 75.
