A summer of upheaval is under way at Newcastle United after the club’s lowest Premier League finish in five years – a 12th-place campaign that cost them European football in the season just gone. The disappointment has triggered a major squad rebuild, with two of Eddie Howe’s most influential players already sold. Midfielder Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £100m deal, while winger Anthony Gordon secured a move to Barcelona. In response, Newcastle have brought in three new faces: Sean Steur, Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen, the £18.5m goalkeeper from Stade Reims. A fourth arrival is close, with the club agreeing a deal worth up to £34m for Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba.
But the business may not stop there. With Aaron Ramsdale, John Ruddy and Max Thompson all having left, and Jaouen yet to feature in top-flight football, the Magpies could still add another goalkeeper. Burnley’s James Trafford initially attracted interest but the club’s pursuit has cooled; Trafford is now reported to prefer a move to Leeds United, who are in talks with Manchester City. For now, Nick Pope is expected to remain first choice, with Jaouen providing competition from the bench.

Right‑back is also a key concern. Tino Livramento withdrew from England’s World Cup squad through injury, raising doubts about his fitness for a consistent run. Guela Doue – brother of France and Paris Saint‑Germain star Désiré Doue – is among the names on Newcastle’s radar, as is Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, who would be a savvy addition to Howe’s defence. The £100m departure of Tonali has left a gap in midfield, and Chronicle Live understands that Spurs midfielder Lucas Bergvall has been made available to the Magpies.
With the new season less than a month away and a home opener against Liverpool, Howe’s starting XI could look radically different by the time the transfer window closes. Still, despite the flurry of activity, the club show no signs of pumping the brakes on spending.
