The first England training session in Kansas revealed more than just tactics. Rising star Nico O'Reilly, 21, unveiled a roadmap inked on his skin: 'The World is Yours' on his right shoulder, 'Everything is possible for those who believe' just below, and 'Stay Humble' on his right arm. A signpost points to 'Dreams' on one side, 'Reality' on the other. On his left shoulder, a peace sign; beneath it, the words 'No Ball Games' and the Manchester dialling code 0161 – a nod to his City roots.
Two hours after that session, a tornado struck the area. But O'Reilly, likely to play left back for England, was already focused on the tournament ahead. 'Togetherness,' he said. 'It is a really great group and we have bonded. I think you will see that on the pitch.'
“England's Nico O'Reilly shows tattooed ambitions as Germany thrash Curacao on World Cup's opening day.”
Teammate Dan Burn, 34, at his first World Cup, echoed the sentiment. 'Brotherhood, the manager has spoken a lot about that. It is a big thing. First and foremost, we have top-quality players and one of the best forwards in the World in Harry Kane. I feel like this is the type of tournament where players who are normally stars for their clubs are going to have to take a slightly different role.'
Meanwhile, Germany began their campaign with a ruthless statement. Kai Havertz scored twice as the four-time winners thumped Curacao, the tournament debutants who made history with their first-ever World Cup goal – but were ultimately outclassed.
Pam Kramer, CEO of KC2026, said she was 'thrilled' to welcome England. 'The fact that Kansas City was selected as a base camp destination for England, Argentina, the Netherlands and Algeria speaks to the strength of our soccer culture and decades of investment in the game. This summer is about more than matches. It's an opportunity to showcase a region that is welcoming, and ready to host the world.'
