Andre Onana rejoins Trabzonspor on loan as Manchester United goalkeeping shake-up continues

Andre Onana will spend another season in Turkey after Manchester United confirmed the Cameroon international has rejoined Trabzonspor on loan for the 2026-27 campaign. The 30-year-old, who revitalised his career in Turkey last term, will have his wages covered in full by the Süper Lig side, who will also pay United a £1.3m loan fee. There is no option to buy in the deal.

Onana fell out of favour at Old Trafford after United’s shock EFL Cup defeat at League Two Grimsby last August – his only match of the campaign. He was subsequently loaned to Trabzonspor, where he made 29 appearances and helped the club win the Turkish Cup for the first time since 2020. “I’m living the best period of my life,” Onana told Turkish outlet Yeniasir in December. “The time I’ve spent here has been perfect for me. It’s a different lifestyle, but it’s great. Truly incredible, amazing.”

United announced the move on Friday, subject to international clearance and registration. Onana still has two years left on his £47.2m contract and had been due back for pre-season on 9 July, but head coach Michael Carrick had already made Senne Lammens his first-choice goalkeeper. Lammens, who is with Belgium at the World Cup, had an impressive debut season after joining from Royal Antwerp last summer.

Onana’s departure frees up wages and a squad place, allowing United to pursue an experienced No 2 to support Lammens. The club have reportedly shortlisted Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow and Wolves’ Sam Johnstone. Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir, who served as Lammens’ understudy last season, is in talks with Beşiktaş after agreeing personal terms. The Turkey international has made only 17 appearances in three seasons at Old Trafford and could follow Onana out of the door. Promising youngster Radek Vitek is also hoping for a move before pre-season, meaning Carrick may have only veteran Tom Heaton and inexperienced options for the opening friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki on 17 July.
