Coventry face champions Arsenal in Premier League opener as Guardiola era ends

Twenty-five years of waiting ends under the lights at the Emirates. Newly promoted Coventry City will play their first Premier League match in a quarter of a century against the champions Arsenal on Friday 21 August, the curtain‑raiser to a season that begins a month after the World Cup final in the United States.

The Sky Blues, who won the Championship last season, travel to north London for the 8pm kick-off, a fixture that pits Mikel Arteta’s title winners – Arsenal’s first Premier League crown since 2004 – against a club whose last top‑flight visit to the capital came in 2001.

While Coventry begin their campaign with a daunting trip, Hull City – promoted via the play‑offs – host Manchester United on Saturday 22 August, and Ipswich welcome Sunderland on the same day. The weekend’s standout fixture sees Andoni Iraola take his new Liverpool side to Newcastle on Sunday 23 August for his debut match, while Manchester City start life without Pep Guardiola at home to Bournemouth on the same afternoon. Bournemouth themselves begin with a new manager, Marco Rose, as the Cherries visit the Etihad.

Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea reign begins on Monday 24 August away at Fulham, who are still searching for a successor to Marco Silva. The following weekend brings Iraola’s first Anfield match, against Nottingham Forest, and Coventry’s first top‑flight home game since 2001 – against Hull.

The season’s schedule has been shaped by the World Cup, which ends 34 days before the Premier League begins. As a result the campaign finishes later than usual, on Sunday 30 May 2027, with the Champions League final six days after. Three promoted clubs, a joint‑record nine Premier League teams in European competition and a merged three‑week international break in September‑October are among the other changes.

Boxing Day offers a poignant return: Coventry’s manager Frank Lampard will take his side to Stamford Bridge, where he once played and managed. The Manchester derby falls on the weekend of 12 September at Old Trafford, and Liverpool visit Everton on the same weekend in late November that City face Arsenal at the Emirates. The season ends with Arsenal hosting Brighton, City at Sunderland, and Liverpool at home to Bournemouth – Iraola’s former club.
