Marcus Rashford’s hopes of a clean break from Manchester United have suffered another blow after the £40m exit clause in his contract expired, leaving the forward facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford. The 28-year-old, who returned to United this summer after an 18-month loan spell that took him to Aston Villa and Barcelona, had been widely expected to secure a permanent move away. But Barcelona declined to trigger a £26m option to sign him, and now the clause that would have allowed any other club – except Manchester City and Liverpool – to buy him for £40m has also lapsed, according to The Athletic.
Rashford, who has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for United, remains under contract until 2028. The expiry of the clause means any interested club must now open fresh negotiations with United, a process that could prove more complex and expensive. Speaking earlier this month, Rashford said: “I live in the moment. I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup. I wanted everything resolved beforehand. Since it wasn't, I'm not thinking about it until after the tournament. I want to be fully present because we're fighting for something very special.”
“Marcus Rashford's £40m Manchester United exit clause has expired, complicating his departure after Barcelona declined to sign him.”
His comments came as England reached the World Cup semi-finals, where they were beaten by Argentina. Rashford scored once in five appearances in the tournament, netting in the 4-2 group-stage win over Croatia. He has reportedly already turned down approaches from elsewhere, some offering more lucrative terms than his current deal.
Rashford’s previous loan at Barcelona was productive – he scored 14 goals in 49 games and helped the club win the Spanish title – but the Catalan giants opted not to make the move permanent. His long-standing reluctance to join United’s rivals was made clear in 2018, when he said: “No. Liverpool was never an option. Liverpool, City, Everton – there was no other club I really would have enjoyed going to other than United. It just felt like the natural thing to do.”
With the clause gone and Barcelona out of the picture, Rashford’s path to a departure appears narrower than ever. The coming weeks will reveal whether any club is willing to engage in direct talks with United, or whether the forward faces the prospect of staying put at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.
