Real Madrid break women's transfer record as Konate joins on free

Real Madrid have shattered the women's football transfer record by signing teenage forward Felicia Schroeder from BK Hacken, while also agreeing a four-year deal with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer.

The 19-year-old Sweden international has scored 91 goals in 128 games for the Swedish club and signed a four-year contract with the Spanish side. Hacken confirmed the deal makes Schroeder "the most expensive transfer ever in women's football", though both the club and her agent declined to disclose the exact fee. A Hacken spokesperson told Reuters: "It's based on this price tag being higher than the previous record sum of $1.5m, a record sum that was confirmed at the time by the Orlando Pride." That previous record was set last summer when Orlando Pride paid $1.5m (£1.1m) for Mexico winger Lizbeth Ovalle.

Schroeder, who scored 30 goals as Hacken won the Damallsvenskan in 2025, was described by Real as "the standout star of the tournament" at the recent Women's Europa Cup. The club finished second in Spain's Liga F last season, 15 points behind champions Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have also secured the signing of France centre-back Ibrahima Konate, 27, on a four-year contract until 30 June 2030. Konate is leaving Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of June after the two parties failed to agree a new deal due to a gap over his value and wages. He joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m and made 183 appearances, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups. Konate recently said he was "deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye" to the Liverpool fans, adding: "At that moment, I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you."

The double signing comes as Real Madrid, who did not win a trophy last season, have appointed Jose Mourinho as manager for his second spell in charge. Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva has also joined on a free transfer from Manchester City, while Spain defender Marc Cucurella has arrived from Chelsea in a £52m deal.
