Real Madrid and Brighton complete defensive signings as Dumfries and Svoboda move

Real Madrid have signed Netherlands full-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan on a four-year deal, activating his 20m euros (£17.1m) release clause. The 30-year-old, who helped Inter win two Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia trophies, becomes Real's fourth summer signing after Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konate. He is set to provide competition for England international Trent Alexander-Arnold. The move follows a trophyless season for Real, during which president Florentino Perez promised to strengthen defensive options as part of his successful re-election campaign—a pledge that also saw Jose Mourinho return as manager for a second spell. Dumfries made 207 appearances for Inter, scoring 27 goals and providing 28 assists, and helped the Netherlands reach the last 32 at this summer's World Cup.

Meanwhile, Brighton have strengthened their own backline by signing Austria centre-back Michael Svoboda from Serie B champions Venezia on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee. The 27-year-old captained Venezia to the Serie B title last season, and Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler praised his attributes, saying: “Michael has enjoyed a fantastic season with Venezia, captaining them to the league title. He has a number of attributes that we believe will see him adapt well to how we play, both in and out of possession. He also adds competition to an area we are looking to strengthen and with a number of clubs pursuing him this summer, I am very happy that he’s decided to come to Brighton.” Svoboda began his career at Schwechat and WSG Tirol before moving to Venezia in 2020, earning promotion to Serie A twice and making his Austria debut in October 2024, winning four caps.

Svoboda is Brighton’s fifth signing for the 2026-27 campaign, following teenage winger Zadok Yohanna from AIK, Leeds United centre-back Pascal Struijk, Olympiakos full-back Costinha and Benfica winger Rodrigo Rego. The Seagulls have also agreed a club record £46m deal with Tottenham for Croatia defender Luka Vuskovic as they reshape their defence after selling Jan Paul van Hecke to Spurs for £52m. Brighton originally signed Van Hecke from NAC Breda for £1.8m in 2020 and negotiated a 20% sell-on clause as part of the deal.
