Real Madrid have completed the £51.8m signing of Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella on a six-year deal, triggering a swift response from the Blues who are already planning two major signings under new manager Xabi Alonso.
The 27-year-old left-back, currently with Spain at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, will move for an initial £47.5m plus £4.3m in add-ons. The agreement was struck on Sunday and formally announced on Monday, with Cucurella understood to have been keen to return to Spain after coming through Barcelona's academy.

His departure from Stamford Bridge ends a turbulent spell that saw him join for £63m from Brighton in 2022. Cucurella was part of a core group of Spanish-speaking players frustrated by the club's hierarchy, giving an interview during the March international break criticising Chelsea following Enzo Maresca's mid-season departure. He struggled to perform under Maresca's successor, Liam Rosenior, who was eventually sacked after Chelsea finished 10th and failed to qualify for Europe. Calum McFarlane served as caretaker before Alonso, the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss, was appointed for the 2026-27 campaign.
Cucurella still had three years left on his contract, having agreed improved terms without an extension last season – a factor that likely influenced Chelsea's decision to accept Real's offer. The Spaniard won the Conference League and Club World Cup during his time at Chelsea.
Real Madrid, under newly re-elected president Florentino Perez and manager Jose Mourinho, are also targeting departing Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries, while France defender Ibrahima Konate is set to join after leaving Liverpool. Meanwhile, talks between Chelsea and Manchester City over Maresca, who left Chelsea mid-season, are ongoing.
With Cucurella's sale, Chelsea now have additional funds to back Alonso in the transfer market, with the London club planning two major signings to rebuild after a dismal campaign.
