Real Madrid's Cucurella deal sets off chain reaction that could hand Man Utd Tchouameni boost

Real Madrid have announced the £51.8m signing of Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella on a six-year deal, a move that has set off a transfer chain reaction which could hand Manchester United a surprise midfield target.

The 27-year-old Cucurella, who is with Spain at the World Cup, joins for an initial £47.5m plus £4.3m in add-ons, with the agreement struck on Sunday and confirmed on Monday. The deal marks the first major acquisition under Jose Mourinho, who was appointed manager after Florentino Perez was re-elected as president. Real are also targeting departing Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries, and France defender Ibrahima Konate, who is set to join after leaving Liverpool.

Real Madrid's £51.8m Cucurella signing could free up Tchouameni for Manchester United.

Cucurella, who joined Chelsea for £63m from Brighton in 2022, had been keen to return to Spain after coming through Barcelona's academy. He had been linked with Atletico Madrid and a move back to Barcelona. His relationship with Chelsea soured after Enzo Maresca's mid-season departure; Cucurella gave an interview in March criticising the club's hierarchy and was part of a core group of Spanish-speaking players frustrated under Maresca's successor Liam Rosenior. Rosenior was eventually sacked, with Chelsea finishing 10th and failing to qualify for Europe. Xabi Alonso has since been appointed as manager for 2026-27.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Mourinho's preferred midfield target is Mateus Fernandes, the West Ham midfielder who impressed despite his club's relegation to the Championship. Fernandes missed out on Portugal's World Cup squad but has attracted interest from Manchester United. Should Real Madrid secure Fernandes, the report suggests Aurelien Tchouameni would be the likeliest departure from the Bernabeu, with proceeds used to fund a replacement.

That scenario presents an opportunity for Manchester United. Michael Carrick's side have already struck an agreement with Atalanta for Brazil international Ederson and are seeking another midfield recruit. Elliot Anderson is the primary target but is expected to join Manchester City. Arsenal and Tottenham are among other Premier League clubs pursuing midfielders, but Real Madrid's pursuit of Fernandes could free up Tchouameni, who is currently at the World Cup alongside Real's four new signings.

United have also been linked with Fernandes as a direct target, along with West Ham team-mates Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville, with the club's relegation likely to trigger departures. Everton's Iliman Ndiaye is another attacking option. Strengthening at left-back is also high on the agenda, with Lewis Hall, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Nathaniel Brown mentioned as potential recruits.

Outgoings are anticipated at Old Trafford: Rasmus Hojlund has already completed a permanent switch to Napoli, and Manuel Ugarte is expected to join Casemiro in leaving the club. Marcus Rashford's future continues to dominate headlines, with his chances of joining Barcelona diminishing after the arrival of Anthony Gordon.
