Real Madrid have issued a categorical denial that they are trying to sign Enzo Fernandez, releasing a statement insisting they have “no intention” of pursuing the Chelsea midfielder this summer. The Spanish club said reports of their interest “do not correspond to reality” and that they had made “no effort, either direct or indirect” to sign the 25-year-old Argentina international.
The denial comes after Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, fuelled speculation by saying the player was exploring his options to leave Stamford Bridge. Fernandez himself was handed a two-game suspension by former manager Liam Rosenior in April after saying he did not know whether he would remain at Chelsea and that he would “love” to live in Madrid.
“Real Madrid insist they have no intention of signing Enzo Fernandez, as his partner says she’s happy with any move.”
But Real Madrid’s statement, published on Friday, made clear they consider the speculation unfounded. “The club wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernandez, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely known, as well as for Chelsea FC, with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship,” the statement read. “Precisely because of the respect that an entity like Chelsea FC deserves and because of the principles of institutional loyalty that have always governed the actions of Real Madrid, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny speculations that are unfounded and do not correspond to reality.”
Chelsea have confirmed they have not received any club-to-club approach from Real for Fernandez. The Blues value the midfielder at £120m should serious interest materialise but are not actively looking to sell and would be happy to retain him under new coach Xabi Alonso. Fernandez, who cost a British record £107m when he joined from Benfica in February 2023, is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
While Fernandez is in North America representing Argentina at the World Cup, his partner Valu Cervantes has made her feelings on a potential transfer clear. Speaking to El Chiringuito, she said: “No honestly, it’s fine. My son was born in England and they go to school there, so I’m very happy. Any team is fine with me. Whichever team it is, I’ll be fine.” When asked if Real Madrid would be any different, she added: “No for me the teams are the same.”
Fernandez’s future comes as Real Madrid have already signed Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella this summer in a deal worth up to £51.8m. The World Cup winner has scored 15 goals in all competitions for Chelsea last season and won the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup with the club.
