Record 9.1m watch England's epic World Cup win over Mexico as Tuchel's 'rock' mantra pays off

More than nine million people stayed up until 4am to watch England's dramatic 3-2 win over Mexico, making it the biggest television audience ever for a live UK broadcast between 02:00 and 04:00.

A peak of 9.1 million tuned in on BBC TV and iPlayer, with an average of 7.8m watching Jude Bellingham score twice at the Azteca Stadium as England survived a Mexico fightback to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. The BBC Sport website and app recorded 15m unique visitors on its biggest day, while social platforms notched 330m video views.

After the match, Thomas Tuchel paid his players the ultimate compliment. Defender Nico O'Reilly revealed the manager had previously urged the squad to keep “pounding the rock” – maintaining effort to break teams down. But after the Mexico thriller, O'Reilly said: “He said in this game we were the rock. They were after us. But we managed to get the win.”

O'Reilly, who will face Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland on Saturday, added: “Character – that's what we can take. Even when we were outnumbered, stuff was going against us, we dug in. If we continue to have this character, no one can stop us.”

England face Norway in Miami at 22:00 BST on Saturday. Norway upset Brazil to reach the last eight, with Haaland scoring seven goals so far. England will be without suspended Jarell Quansah and injured Jordan Henderson, but Reece James is expected to be fit.
