Tapia, however, issued a forceful statement aimed at drawing a line under the controversy. "Don't be fooled by lies," he said. "They were superior, they beat us fair and square." He urged fans not to be "swayed by schemes that only seek to destabilise". In a lengthy message, Tapia also sought to praise the team's efforts over more than 50 days away from their families, saying: "We compete with grit, with passion, and with heart."
"In sports, you also learn by accepting defeats with the same grace with which you celebrate victories," Tapia added. "Yes, we lost a final. But it's also true that this group had just brought immense joy to the country." He acknowledged the pain of losing: "It hurts because we are competitive, because we are the most successful team in history, and because second place is never enough for us."
The FA president's intervention comes after a deeply emotional press conference in which Scaloni was visibly distressed. The manager, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, now faces an uncertain future with his contract status unclear. For now, Tapia's message is clear: the defeat was fair, the conspiracy theories are lies, and it is time to move on.
