Scotland’s McTominay trains on World Cup eve after stomach upset

Scott McTominay was back on the training pitch on Friday, a day after an upset stomach had forced him to sit out, as Scotland prepared for their first World Cup match in 28 years. The Napoli midfielder, 29, had travelled with the squad from their base camp in Charlotte on Thursday but then made the onward journey separately, accompanied by a doctor, in what the camp described as a precautionary measure.

By Friday, McTominay was once again part of the group, taking part in the final session before Scotland’s Group stage opener against Haiti on Saturday (Sunday 02:00 BST) at Boston Stadium in Foxborough. The team will also face Morocco and Brazil in the group phase.

McTominay has been Scotland’s leading man in recent campaigns, with 15 goals in 70 caps. He found the net in the convincing 4-0 win over Bolivia on Saturday, continuing his rich vein of form. His availability will be a relief to manager Steve Clarke as Scotland seek to make an impact on their return to the global stage.
