'We gave them the goals': Scotland's World Cup hopes hang by a thread after Brazil rout

Scotland’s World Cup campaign is hanging by a thread after a 3-0 defeat by Brazil left Steve Clarke’s side relying on a mathematical miracle to reach the last 32.

Midfielder John McGinn admitted it is “unlikely” they will progress, while head coach Clarke was blunt: “We made it difficult for ourselves, that’s it. We gave them the goals, we gave them the game they wanted. Disappointing.”

Scotland face World Cup exit after 3-0 Brazil defeat leaves Clarke and McGinn despondent.

The defeat in Miami means Scotland finish third in Group C with three points and a goal difference of minus three. They must now wait until the other groups conclude to discover if they are among the eight best third‑place teams. Opta put their chances at 42% after full time, but the mood in the camp was despondent.

Brazil struck twice before half‑time. First, Scott McKenna was caught on the ball by Bournemouth forward Rayan, and Vinicius Jr skipped past goalkeeper Angus Gunn to score. Then Gunn and full‑back Nathan Patterson were caught under a Bruno Guimaraes cross as Vinicius Jr nodded in his second. After the break, Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha added a third.

“We lose poor goals at poor times against a team that can punish you with quality,” McGinn told BBC Sport. “We had a few chances but we’ve got to wait now. The lads are gutted. We fell short on quality but we gave it absolutely everything. The lads are empty now. It’s unlikely [that we qualify] but we’ll wait and see.”

Clarke, who signed a new deal with the national team until 2030 earlier this year, later gave a more in‑depth interview but struck a similarly pessimistic tone. “It was unbelievable the shift the players put in, the ones who played 90 minutes in that heat and humidity were outstanding, but…”

The manager has now had time to ponder questions he earlier dismissed rudely, according to reports. But for Scotland, the wait for an answer on their World Cup fate could stretch into the early hours of Sunday – and almost certainly bring the news they dread.
