Two notable figures from entertainment and sport have died. Sir Garry Sobers, the West Indies all-rounder widely regarded as one of cricket's greatest players, has died aged 89. Sobers scored 365 not out in 1958, a record for the highest individual Test score that stood for 36 years.
British-Australian actor Terence Donovan, known for roles in Neighbours and Home and Away, died aged 90 on Saturday night in Melbourne, his son, actor Jason Donovan, confirmed on social media. "Our Dad was a huge character, larger than life," Jason wrote alongside his brother Paul. "He was our best friend ... our world! We will desperately miss him but we take comfort knowing we were all here by his side in his final days."
“Sir Garry Sobers, cricket legend, dies aged 89; Neighbours actor Terence Donovan dies aged 90, his son Jason confirms.”
London-born Donovan moved to Australia as a teenager and started as a singer before making his screen debut in the early 1960s. He later secured roles as Detective Mick Peters in Division 4 and Detective Senior Sergeant Vic Cameron in Cop Shop. He joined Neighbours in the 1990s as Doug Willis, shortly after his son Jason had left the show, and also featured as Al Simpson on Home and Away. His film credits include The Man from Snowy River and Breaker Morant.
In his tribute, Jason also highlighted his father's activism in the early 1970s to support the Australian film and television industry, marching under a banner that read 'T.V. MAKE IT AUSTRALIA NOW'. "Without people like my Dad we might not have seen the growth in the industry during the 70s and 80s," Jason wrote.
