World Cup strips SoFi Stadium of its name as LA prepares for star-studded opening ceremony

The most expensive sports venue on the planet will go by a different name tonight when it hosts the United States men’s national team’s World Cup opener against Paraguay. SoFi Stadium, whose regular name is tied to a multimillion-dollar corporate naming rights agreement with the financial services company Social Finance, Inc., has been temporarily rebranded as “Los Angeles Stadium” under FIFA’s strict “clean stadium” policy — a regulation that bans all corporate branding from tournament venues to protect the exclusive commercial rights of its official partners.

The renaming is strictly temporary: once the final match concludes in July, the Inglewood landmark will immediately revert to its standard commercial signage. But for the duration of the tournament, the stadium will appear as Los Angeles Stadium across official brackets, broadcasts and ticket registries.

Tonight’s fixture is the first of eight high-profile matches scheduled at the venue between June 12 and July 10. Fans attending the USMNT opener will notice gates opening four hours prior to kick-off to accommodate heightened security. The stadium will also host four more group-stage matches involving teams like Belgium, Iran and Switzerland, two round-of-32 matches, and a quarter-final on July 10.

The commercial branding ban extends to all other American venues operating under corporate sponsorships. MetLife Stadium has been renamed “New York New Jersey Stadium,” AT&T Stadium in Arlington is now “Dallas Stadium,” and Mercedes-Benz Stadium is designated as “Atlanta Stadium.” In Mexico, Estadio Akron is being called “Guadalajara Stadium” in all official documentation.

Before the match, a further star-studded opening ceremony is scheduled in Los Angeles, following earlier spectaculars in Mexico City and Toronto. The ceremony adds to the sense of occasion as the tournament’s three co-hosts begin their campaigns.

With the world’s most expensive stadium stripped of its corporate identity and a glittering show about to begin, Los Angeles Stadium stands ready to serve as a major centrepiece for the World Cup — at least until July, when the billionaire brand reclaims its name.
