The England captain walked free — but not without a fight. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have been issued written warnings over their visit to a Chelsea nightclub, with the Cricket Regulator concluding they were not to blame for the violent conduct that erupted in the Rex Rooms. The decision came after an hour of silence following England’s 253-run defeat at The Oval, when coach Brendon McCullum finally addressed the elephant in the room. “Ben will be back and he’ll be captain,” McCullum told the written media, ditching the caveats he had used moments earlier with Sky Sports. “At this stage, we are anticipating Ben will be back.”

The ECB had already pulled Stokes and Atkinson from their County Championship matches for Durham and Surrey before the fifth day’s play. But the fact it was left to the coach — not the regulator or the ECB’s communications department — to confirm the captain’s return summed up a fortnight of chaos. Initially, managing director of cricket Rob Key had spoken of his “anger” and “disbelief” about the incident, insisting the players knew a curfew was in place “throughout the whole series”. Now the regulator is thought to have concluded the curfew was not made clear enough. Atkinson had repeatedly told those close to him he did not know it was in place after a Test match had finished.

McCullum acknowledged the ambiguity. “To suggest that perhaps there may not have been a hard blueprint potentially, I mean like a hard factual [curfew], everyone knew what was going on,” he said. “In regard to making sure we have things better documented so there is no uncertainty around it, that is something we will do.” The night out at the Rex Rooms turned violent when Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa punched England security guard James Shaw after aiming a punch at Atkinson. Two-and-a-half hours after McCullum spoke, the ECB officially confirmed the written warnings. Stokes will now return to lead England in next week’s series decider against New Zealand at Trent Bridge — but the question of who truly dropped the ball on accountability remains unanswered.
